The Floriston water gods have spoken and as of today, August 5, it is officially 2011 Floating Season in Tahoe!

Annually marked by the first day of operation for Truckee River rafting companies, floating the Truckee is one of the most highly anticipated and highly acclaimed activities there is to do in Tahoe.  Of course this year, record snow pack in the Sierras has provided Floriston with enough water to keep the gates closed, Lake Tahoe high, and the Truckee River low. Until now.  The gates have opened, the blue rafts are out, people are happy.  So go grab your coolers, a raft, and a 30 rack, and we’ll see you on the River.

Shout out to Truckee River Rafting, Co., Mountain Air Sports the new Truckee River Taxi, River Ranch, and the countless other business that todays news brings joy to.  Our winter fun caused your sorrow.

Here are some photos from Fridays opening day!

Here are some floaters revelling in the Mike Wilson triple ropeswing back flip swimming hole.

Party Island was mildly crowded, but as they say, if you build it, they will come.

These folks just took the last rapid like a champ, narrowly escaping after being pinned against a rock for at least 45 seconds.  It was close.

River Ranch had their grills fired up, awaiting the onslaught of floating victims in need of some late night food in the middle of the afternoon.

For all you nerds out there, the Truckee River damn still has only one gate open, gate number 7, and was releasing approximately 160 CFS’ as of Friday morning.  That’s down from 336 CFS’ from this date last year.  Lake level is at 6,228.4, down .01 from yesterday.
