boozing on the tram

boozing on the tram

It’s been over a week since we’ve had fresh snow.  It’s kinda hard to believe.  It’s even harder to believe that the conditions at Squaw have held up.  The temps haven’t gotten above 35F all week and the snow stayed.  Yeah, it’s kind of an Fing miracle.  Sunny and cold and no snow melt in California for a week…but it happened.

Today the skiing was still good.  You could go off-piste without getting chattered so hard you lost a filling.  The off-piste even stayed chalky and the wind had deposited snow between the bumps and rollers and actually left some soft pockets of soft snow.

The exception to this today was Silverado.  Some sort of pure Evil was living in Silverado today and it damn near had it’s way with me.  Silvy was punchy and icy and crusty and nasty all at once.

The visibility was the real challenge today.  The afternoon’s goggle sticking mist didn’t help much.  Sadly enough Shirley Lake was the most reliable skiing today.  Enchanted Forest off KT was good, but you’d get vertigo from the lack of contrast and just fall over occasionally.

This week is going to be interesting.  It looks like more dreadful weather tomorrow and Thursday and then sun for the weekend.  The problem is that the weather isn’t going to help the conditions any.  I think on friday there might be enough windbuff to rip a few high speed turns, but I wouldn’t bust out the fatties nor prepare your spine for a Glory Rock huckfest.

For the next couple days I recommend going straight to the High Camp bar and drinking heavily.  This is a win-win because it gives you the option to ski (u could just ride the cable car down) and you can tell stories about how rad you are to Bartender Ben, and he’ll believe you (a seriously gullible guy).

Fortunately it is going to be a great weekend for skiing, but it won’t be powder.  And this season, my body doesn’t understand non-powder.  So we’ll see how we do out there.
