Jackson Hole: Jan. 3

January 3rd, 2011 by

I think we can officially call this a ‘cold snap.’ The temperatures have not gotten much above 0 for a good stretch now. It may take some motivation to get out of the house, but it is worth it. The snow is still great. The bowl has been smoothed out by the winds and as you continue down the mountain, the snow only gets better. If you are looking for fresh snow, there are still plenty of pockets in the trees. It was also killer to have the blue skies to be able to see what you are riding.

Terrain Report 1/1/11- Happy New Year From Unofficial

If you’re not scared of the cold, there’s some amazing skiing to be had. Although a north wind messed up some of the north facing aspects, there’s still plenty of pockets of insanely good skiing and riding. Snow’s chalky in bounds, while the lower elevations continue to deliver out of bounds.  Check out some clips from the last couple days of bluebird (and cold) pow. What a way to bring in 2011!

Jackson-Backcountry Zones: Breakneck

If you live in Jackson, have bright clothes and ride with a transceiver, backpack, probe and shovel; you probably have skied/gotten down breakneck.   Over the years, the sight of  skiers ripping different lines down breakneck has appeared in many ski movies.  It is a beautiful face with a variety of routes and features, and it is very easily accessible from the tram.  Making it one of the more skied ‘film lines’ in Jackson Hole  sidecountry.

Jackson Hole: What a great December

December 30th, 2010 by

The end of December is finishing up like the beginning, heaps of great snow.  Today was a little colder, but with a little snow last night, it was just another powder day.  Top to bottom the mountain was riding great.  The bowl was skiing great.  Or if you want to get radical, Corbets is nice and deep.  From there it is hard to go wrong.  All the way to the bottom of the lower faces things are nice and soft.

Jackson Hole 12-29

December 29th, 2010 by

WOW.  It was sick out there today.  It started snowing late last night and came in strong.  There was only 7″  reported this morning, but it was riding much deeper.  The upper mountain was not quite as good as the lower mountain, but still great.  It came in a little lighter up top, so you were hitting bottom.  As you made it lower, the snow was thicker and riding great.  Heard a few people claim ‘best Hobacks all season.’  Only problem about riding the lower mountain, was trying to get back on the tram.  Holiday crowds plus a  powder day results in a three box wait.  But in my opinion, it was quite worth the wait.

Jackson Christmas Presents: Bluebird Days and the Horseshoe Couloir

December 26th, 2010 by

What’d you get for Christmas? Well, if you were in Jackson you got a bluebird powder day. If you were Eric you also got the Horseshoe Couloir without the rappel- not a bad gift. Yesterday was incredible- warm temps up high and absolutely gorgeous. Today looks like it will be a little more overcast, so I’d stay in the north-facing trees. Backcountry should still be pretty good, although the more popular spots are getting a little more hammered. Don’t be afraid to get out there and do a little exploring! Thanks Eric for the video!
