Gnarly thing to come across while driving down the road. Thankfully no vehicles were caught in this slide SR 20, known as the North Cascades Highway, east of Newhalem, Washington.

KING5 reports The Washington Department of Transportation estimates the snow slide to be 300 feet wide and up to 30 feet high. There are 55 to 60 people behind the slide area, but WSDOT says they all have access to food and shelter.

“Our number one priority is to keep both travelers and our employees safe.We need to let the risk of avalanche ease up and wait for daylight tomorrow before we can get back out there and start the process to clear the road and get traffic moving on the highway again.” -WSDOT Assistant Regional Administrator Dave McCormick

There are no reports of injury related to the SR 20 avalanche and closure but a separate avalanche on Washington’s Stampede Pass killed one person and injured three others.
