A 35 year-old New Zealand native and Japanese resident who lived and worked in the greater Niseko/Kutchan area of Hokkaido has died in an avalanche reports The Japan Times.

Local officials are saying Samuel Kerr was skiing at one of the Niseko resorts in an closed area when the avalanche struck his party. Kerr was buried in the slide while one other in the party suffered minor chest injuries. He was later pulled from beneath the snow by rescue personnel.

Kerr worked as director/head guide of a local outfitter, Niseko Xtreme Tours. He is survived by his child, Rui and his wife, Yuka .
