sunday river lift damageNo injuries were reported after the top unloading terminal of the Spruce Peak Triple chairlift at Sunday River ski resort became separated from the ground and broke into pieces causing the cable and chairs to drop according to the hastingstribune.com.

No one was injured because the lift was out of operation for the summer. The damage was first discovered by a maintenance manager Sunday evening. Engineers are determining the cause of the failure and whether or not to repair of replace the lift that was installed in 1986.

Sunday River released a statement about the incident, including this excerpt that looks like maybe a lawyer gave it a once over:

“On Sunday evening, July 10, 2016, Sunday River Resort’s lift maintenance manager discovered that the foundation of the top terminal of the Spruce Peak Triple chairlift had become detached from the underlying ground.  The detachment caused the top terminal to be pulled downhill, which released tension on the haul rope and caused the rope and chairs to lower to the ground between some of the lift’s towers.” – sundayriver.com/news

This is Maine’s third major chairlift failure in 6 years, including rollback at Sugarloaf that injured 15 people.
