There’s a reason why the bus from Jon Krakauer’s non-fiction book, “Into The Wild“ was Chris McCandless’ final resting place. The precarious spot located near the Stampede trail is subject to the whims of the Teklanika River. Those whims ultimately forced McCandless back into his bus, where he would later die.

Luckily, two southerners avoided a similar fate after coming close to being swept downstream while hiking from the famous bus reports KTUU. The two hikers, 25 year-old Michael Trigg of Lexington, SC and 27 year-old Theodore Aslund of Atlanta were returning from their pilgrimage to the bus when they decided to save time by crossing the Teklanika river. That ill conceived choice almost killed the two but luckily they avoided being swept down river and were able to get back to the river bank.
The two indicated their intentions to visit the bus in an earlier Facebook post and after failing to return at a designated time, a search and rescue effort was initiated. Ultimately 24 people were dispatched to the scene along with a helicopter. Trigg and Aslund were later found in good condition. According to the NPS, they referred to themselves as “experienced backcountry hikers.”
