A 44-year-old New Zealand woman is dead after she fell more than 300′ while trying to find her snowboard. The incident occurred this past weekend at the Whakapapa ski field in New Zealand.
The woman plunged to her death after she had climbed around a safety barrier to find her runaway snowboard. Whakapapa area manager Steve McGill said it appeared the woman had lost her board while on a “nice easy trail” and gone in search of it.
“She’s gone too close to the edge and lost her footing in the process,” Mr McGill told NZ Newswire.
“There was lots a signage around there, warning signs and snow safety walls, that she must have gone beyond, not realising the dangers of those areas.”
This is the second death at Whakapapa ski field in the past year. Last season an Italian lift operator Elias Hofer, 25, is believed to have also fallen to his death. (Skier Falls to His Death at New Zealand Ski Resort)
