Geography & Wildlife:

  • Elevation Range: From 1,370 feet (415 meters) to 14,494 feet (4,418 meters) at the summit of Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States.
  • Mountain Ranges: The Sierra Nevada
  • Rivers: The Kaweah and Kern Rivers
  • Wilderness Areas: 84% of the park is designated wilderness.
  • Mammals: Black bears, mule deer, mountain lions, and marmots.
  • Birds: Great gray owls, peregrine falcons, and woodpeckers.
  • Reptiles and Amphibians: Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (endangered).
  • Fish: Native trout species in rivers and streams.

Climate:

  • Summer: Warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 70–90°F (21–32°C) at lower elevations.
  • Winter: Snowy and cold, especially at higher elevations, with temperatures dropping below freezing.
