Geography & Wildlife:
- Elevation Range: From 1,370 feet (415 meters) to 14,494 feet (4,418 meters) at the summit of Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States.
- Mountain Ranges: The Sierra Nevada
- Rivers: The Kaweah and Kern Rivers
- Wilderness Areas: 84% of the park is designated wilderness.
- Mammals: Black bears, mule deer, mountain lions, and marmots.
- Birds: Great gray owls, peregrine falcons, and woodpeckers.
- Reptiles and Amphibians: Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (endangered).
- Fish: Native trout species in rivers and streams.
Climate:
- Summer: Warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 70–90°F (21–32°C) at lower elevations.
- Winter: Snowy and cold, especially at higher elevations, with temperatures dropping below freezing.
