We love mountains, we love snow, we hate traffic. If you’ve ever been stuck in an avalanche mitigation situation on a Colorado highway you may have wondered just how many avalanche paths lie above the Centennial States highway system? The answer…..278.
When you think about it, CDOT’s responsibility to keep highways safe in the face of 278 separate avalanche paths seems daunting but with the recent addition of a network 16 of remotely controlled Gazex air cannons, they have the ability to blast in any weather conditions (something you can’t do with traditional Avalaunchers) and they can be triggered with a laptop rather than an onsite crew.
Hats off to CDOT for all the hard work they do to keep Colorado’s roads safe and open for us skiers and snowboarders to get from our doorsteps to the parking lot at the resort. If you know a CDOT worker let them know we appreciate them.
