Cuchara, Colorado — They’re making some big moves over at Cuchara Mountain Park.

Closed in 2000 and abandoned for many years, the site has seen impressive revival efforts. They just reopened Lift 4 during this past winter, meaning they had lift-served skiing for the first time since 2000.

While this past ski season in Colorado was among the worst ever, one ski area is reusing some of its snow for a June weekend full of soft turns.

Last Friday, Cuchara Mountain Park announced it will open for hike-to skiing during the weekend of June 12th and 13th. This was made possible by piling snow and tarping it off. This method is used by ski resorts like Jay Peak and Trollhaugen to host events like rail jams. We’re also seeing ski resorts use innovative blankets to preserve snow for the upcoming season.

Tickets for access to the hike-in park will cost $10. For Saturday’s rail jam, entry tickets will be $20. Cuchara season passholders from the prior winter can ski for free.

The other Colorado ski resort that plans to operate this summer is Copper Mountain. For a select number of individuals, Copper has their summer camps going for terrain park skiers and riders. There’s also the hike-to park, which is set to open for its 2026 run on June 5th.

This Summer At Cuchara

Outside of Cuchara’s skiing this month, there are various summer events planned at the ski resort. This includes archery events, celebrations on Father’s Day and the Fourth of July, and a bike camp. Some of the summer activities that are available to the public include a disc golf course, hiking, and biking.

Planned offseason projects at Cuchara include snowmaking upgrades and new surface lifts for the lower mountain. We’ll detail those plans in the weeks ahead.
