The National Park Service is mourning the passing of retired NPS ranger Betty Reid Soskin, who passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of December 21st, 2025. Betty, who officially retired from the park service in 2022, was the oldest serving park ranger in the history of the United States. She passed at 104.

Betty made significant contributions to the development of Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in California throughout her time with the park service, acting as a powerful voice through the sharing of her own personal stories. She was able to honor the contributions of women from diverse backgrounds who worked throughout World War II in a truly unique manner.

“Betty Reid Soskin was among the best of rangers – those who create links between history and future generations. Her voice enriched and expanded the Rosie story, presenting a broader view of the American home front. Betty’s legacy will inspire future generations to share stories and recognize the influence individuals can have on how history is understood.” – K. Lynn Berry, Superintendent for Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park.

The park service thanked Betty for her service, stories, and her light, while extending their deepest condolences to her entire family and all who loved her. You can read more about her life and career here.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and loved ones of Betty Reid Soskin at this time.
