A hunter in Colorado contacted the local Sheriff’s Office after discovering what he believed to be an old mortar around 2 miles from Interstate 70 near Vail Pass.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy hiked to the location and located the object, taking several photos before sending them to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad for further analysis.
The photos were further forwarded to the United States Army for additional investigation. Fortunately the object did not match any historical weaponry and was confirmed not to be a bomb. Instead, it’s believed the object was a piece of historical mining equipment.
If you encounter or suspect you’ve encountered a piece of munitions, do not touch, move, or disturb it. Immediately and carefully clear the area, following the same route you took to enter. Mark the general area if possible. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MARK THE MUNITION. Once you’re clear of the area, call 911 and report the object and its location to law enforcement.
