August’s full moon is coming up in just a few days. On August 9th, 2025, the moon will be full at 3:55am ET, or 08:55 GMT. All 12 full moons throughout the year are assigned nicknames, often based on Indigenous American names (the 13th full moon occurs every 33 months and is called a “Blue Moon”). While there are several nicknames for August’s full moon, most people refer to as the Full Sturgeon Moon. Here are some facts about the name’s origin and history.

Full Sturgeon Moon Facts

  • In the late summer, as cooler temperatures begin to take hold, Indigenous groups converged on the Great Lakes and other bodies of water. There they hunted for sturgeon.
  • The Sturgeon is the largest fresh water fish in North America. Some reports stating that White Sturgeon can reach lengths of 15-20 feet.
  • These sturgeon were significant for the survival of many tribes. As such, the August full moon earned the nickname of the Full Sturgeon Moon.
  • Indigenous groups who lived further south called it the “Full Red Moon” due to its reddish appearance in the late summer.
  • Some have called it the Green Corn Moon or the Grain Moon, as late summer signified the beginning of the harvest.
  • Other names include the Corn Moon, the Lynx Moon, the Dispute Moon, and the Lightning Moon.
