NASA Artemis emergency egress system
NASA Artemis emergency egress system

Fascinating video from Kennedy Space Center in Florida where NASA gives us a sneak peek behind their emergency egress baskets at Launch Pad 39B for the Artemis missions. The baskets operate much the same way as ski resort gondolas, whisking astronauts and pad personnel safely from the mobile launcher to the base of the pad where they met by transport vehicles to a safe location in the case of an emergency. Each basket is designed to accommodate 5 people with a max weight of 1,500lbs for the 380 foot descent from the launch tower used for the mission. Lets hope this egress system won’t be necessary but it sure looks like fun making sure it works:

About NASA Artemis Campaign:

With NASAโ€™s Artemis campaign, we are exploring the Moon for scientific discovery, technology advancement, and to learn how to live and work on another world as we prepare for human missions to Mars. We will collaborate with commercial and international partners and establish the first long-term presence on the Moon. NASA will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon, using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before.
