Prior to European colonization more than 10 million elk roamed nearly all of the United States and parts of Canada. Today their North American population is stable at around one million which represents a significant recovery from historical lows. In the early 1900s, elk numbers dropped to as few as 50,000-100,000 individuals. Colorado has the largest elk population of any state with an estimated 303,000 elk.
