KSL News is reporting on the tragic death of a 37-year-old skier that took place on the afternoon of March 7th.
The man’s wife alerted authorities when he didn’t pick his kids up from school that evening.
He was found in a tree well in the backcountry near Brighton Resort.

Tree wells aren’t common in Utah, but this year’s record snowfall has created ample opportunities for them to form.
Powder Canada has published the following safety tips to follow if you end up stuck in a tree well:
– Do whatever you can to keep your head above the surface of the snow including rolling, grabbing tree branches or the tree trunk. If possible, keep your feet below level of your head.
– If you become immersed, make a space around your face and protect your airway – resist the urge to struggle, it could compromise your airspace and entrap you further.
– Stay calm to conserve air.
– Trust your partner is on their way.
– If possible, use your cell phone to call ski patrol or the resort’s emergency number.
Please ski/ride with a friend whenever possible. Especially in the backcountry.
