A hiker is recovering from serious injuries after slipping off a trail near the summit of Mount Timpanogos in Utah and falling several hundred feet down a mountainside. The dramatic helicopter rescue happened on October 26, with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office releasing updated footage and details of the operation on November 3.
According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO), the adult female hiker was near the summit when she lost her footing and fell off a cliff. She tumbled and slid several hundred feet before coming to a stop on a small ledge, leaving her stranded in an extremely dangerous position.
Fortunately rescuers were able to locate her from the air. A Utah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue pilot spotted the woman from an airplane and relayed her location to responding crews as additional rescuers began making their way up the mountain.
Helicopter Crew Hoists Injured Hiker From Cliff
The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopter team was called in to assist with the difficult extraction. Using critical information provided by the UCSO pilot, the DPS aircrew quickly located the hiker and successfully hoisted her from the exposed ledge.
The woman was transferred to a waiting ambulance, where members of the Lone Peak Fire Department transported her to Utah Valley Hospital for treatment.
The initial report described the hiker as badly injured following the fall. However there was some encouraging news in the sheriff’s office’s November 3 update. Officials said they had heard the woman was recovering well and wished her a full and speedy recovery.
A Reminder of How Quickly Mountain Conditions Can Turn Dangerous
Mount Timpanogos stands 11,752 feet tall and is a popular hiking destination in Utah’s Wasatch Range. Its dramatic terrain and challenging upper elevations attract hikers from across the region, but the mountain can become particularly hazardous as winter weather arrives.
Snow and ice around exposed trails and steep drop-offs can turn an otherwise manageable hike into a life-threatening situation. Even experienced hikers can find themselves in serious trouble after one unexpected slip.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office used the incident to remind outdoor enthusiasts to exercise extreme caution in high-elevation areas where snow and ice are present.
As the agency noted in its update, a fun day outdoors can turn into a life-or-death situation much faster than people might expect. Thankfully, a quick aerial response and coordinated rescue helped bring this incident to a positive outcome.
