Idaho — While not the most famous ski resort in Idaho, Kelly Canyon has been making strides in recent years to appeal to not just locals. The latest sign of that is the addition of overnight lodging. However, it’s not the typical kind that you find at ski resorts.
This summer, Kelly Canyon opened up four geodesic domes for overnight stays. These domes feature a queen-sized bed, a sleeper sofa, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. Outside of the dome is a large deck, which features a grill, sitting spaces, an outside shower, and a hot tub.
In the summertime, this will appeal to mountain bikers (although the trails are closed this summer), hikers, or those who just want to escape the hustle and bustle of modern-day life. Although there isn’t much hustle and bustle in Idaho except for Boise. In the winter, it’ll appeal to alpine and Nordic skiers, snowboarders, and snowshoers who are eyeing first tracks. No matter the season, the stargazing up there must be nice.

Situated thirty minutes away from Idaho Falls, Kelly Canyon describes itself as “the biggest little ski hill in the USA.” The ski resort features over 740 acres of skiable terrain. Interestingly, the upper portions of Kelly Canyon offer trails for Nordic skiers and snowshoers.
Kelly Canyon is a great stop on a Teton ski trip, as it’s seen various upgrades in recent years. The big addition was a triple chairlift in 2021, modernizing its lift network. They also added a magic carpet in 2021 and a rope tow to their new terrain park last winter.
Planned upgrades for this offseason include expanded snowmaking, growing the terrain park, adding a new parking lot, more glades, and a plan to groom more runs. Other recent upgrades include new trails and glades, adding an Idaho hamburger chain to their base lodge (Big Jud’s).
