Crested Butte, Colorado— Regarded as the “last great Colorado ski town” (at least until Vail showed up), Crested Butte is full of great businesses that evoke a bygone era in ski culture. This includes the Elk Mountain Lodge, which is now looking for a new owner.
Recently, the Elk Mountain Lodge was listed for sale by advisor Channing Boucher. The property features 19 guest bedrooms, 22 bathrooms, a manager’s apartment, and a commercial kitchen to prepare meals for guests. In terms of the lodging infrastructure, the amenities include various common areas, an indoor hot tub, lobby powder rooms, dining spaces, a large front deck, a storage space for skis and bikes, and a small bar.
Located on Elk Street, it’s near various Crested Butte attractions. It’s also near the shuttle stop that takes you to Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Guests also have access to bikes just outside the lodge.
History
Before skiing, Crested Butte was a mining town. In 1919, the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company built a hotel and boardinghouse for its workers. For many years, it served as the home for many workers. However, the Big Mine closed in 1952, beginning Crested Butte’s transition to a skiing community. Austin Yarnel bought the lodge in 1952 and converted the property into a bed-and-breakfast, officially becoming the Elk Mountain Lodge. The lodge was expanded in the 1980s and saw renovations in recent years.
Uses
The key function for this property is for overnight lodging. It’s well-reviewed on travel websites, meaning it has a good reputation. The first floor can be used to house employees or a family who’s looking to help with operations. There’s also a vacant parcel on Belleview Avenue that’s a part of the sale, potentially leading to another business opportunity. It should be noted that this property is not the same as the Elk Mountain Lodge estate in Aspen, which just sold at auction well below the auction price.
