The pond skim is the greatest spring skiing tradition, bringing together riders of all ages to attempt crossing a small body of water with their skis or snowboard on. Costumes, music, unintended swimming, etc. Every ski resort should have a pond skim, whether it be an official competition or just a pond where skiers and snowboarders can gather for some fun.
Big Sky Resort‘s pond skim returned to the mountain in 2025 for the first time since 2019, requiring some top notch planning, specialized equipment, and serious innovation. Grooming Manager and PistenBully Ambassador Matt Fregly helped to document the process behind creating the perfect competition venue.
This year’s pond skim is scheduled for Saturday, April 11th, as a part of Big Sky’s Spring Series. The competition is set to go down from 1:30pm to 3pm, but participant check in is from 9:30am-11am, and there’s plenty of other entertainment throughout the day, including a live DJ set from me n ü.
