Essex, Rhode Island — After a few days of waiting, Rhode Island powderhounds are shredding powder today.

Earlier this week, a Nor’easter slammed Southern New England. One of the big winners from this storm was Yawgoo Valley, as the ski area received around 32 inches of wet snow. Personally, I think Yawgoo has been getting all of this snow because the Washington Post claimed they no longer get the natural stuff, but that’s just a hypothesis.

However, the ski area hasn’t been open for the past few days due to dangerous road conditions. While this new snow sounds good in theory, the issue is that Yawgoo is relatively flat compared to bigger mountains, making a consistent run down in deep powder challenging. This is demonstrated in a video snow report shared by the ski area yesterday, in which the riders appear to be moving as slowly as a turtle. Because of that, groomers have been working on laying down the cord on their open trails.

Yawgoo will operate today from 3-8 p.m., tomorrow from 3 to 8 p.m., and Friday from 10 a.m to 8 p.m. They will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, but the powder will definitely be gone by then.

Ultimately, Yawgoo plans to operate for about 3 more weeks before shutting down for the season on March 15th.

About Yawgoo Valley

Yawgoo Valley, in Essex, Rhode Island, is the state’s only ski area. In the wintertime, the ski area features fourteen trails across 36 skiable acres, three lifts, and a vertical drop of 240 feet. The trails have 100% snowmaking coverage, which comes in handy when they don’t get over 30 inches of powder. There’s also a snow tubing park with two lifts. In the summer, the ski area is home to a water park and tiki bar.
