Sauna built inside a gondola cabin.
Sauna built inside a gondola cabin.

Finland is known for its love of saunas (estimated 3 million saunas in a country of just 5.5 million people), so it’s not all that surprising to see Finnish university students getting creative with their own homemade versions. This build created by members of Aalto University‘s Skipoli (the oldest and largest student organization at the university) is a bit more unique than you might expect.

According to the students, someone reached out to a chairlift manufacturing company in Austria (which appears to be Doppelmayr) to get their hands on a gondola cabin in order to turn in into a sauna. It can apparently get up to around 120ยฐC, or just under 250ยฐF.

Shockingly (or not so shockingly, given that this is Finland we’re talking about) this is just one of many whacky student-built saunas at Aalta University. They’ve shared quite a few to their social media, so make sure to check them out here.

The gondola sauna itself is built on a trailer so it can go just about anywhere that it can be towed. It would be truly something to see a bunch of college students rolling up to their local ski resort in this thing. Perhaps this is a project worth undertaking for the Boulder Freeride Club or the UVM Ski & Snowboard Club.
