The European Alps are full of incredible roads and routes. Everywhere you look, there are mountain passes waiting for the brave cyclist. European ski instructor and cycling fan Marius Quast took the time to rank his top 5 mountain passes throughout the area.

Col de l’Isera

At 9,068 feet (2,764 meters), the Col de l’Isera is Europe’s highest paved Alpine pass on the Grand Alps route from Lake Geneva to the Cote d’Azur. The climb from Val-d’Isère shifts from meadows to a barren, lunar landscape, often covered in snow at the top. The route has been featured in multiple Tour de Frances, most recently in 2019. It is a fairly busy route with traffic and tunnels midday, but its altitude is truly unique.

Furka Pass

A Swiss highlight, Furka Pass pairs with Gotthard and Nufenen for a 62-mile (100 km), 9,843-foot (3,000-meter) elevation bike route. Famous from Goldfinger, it offers Rhone Glacier views. Nufenen is steep, while Gotthard’s Tremola cobblestone road adds historic charm. A challenging, scenic ride, it’s a must for cyclists tackling diverse alpine passes in one day.

Col du Galibier Pass

The Col du Galibier is a Tour de France classic on the Route des Grandes Alpes, starting from Saint Michel de Morine via Col du Télégraphe. The steep, windy climb from Valloire is tough but rewards with views of Mont Blanc and glaciers. A historic, challenging pass with a stunning mountain backdrop, it’s a cyclist’s dream.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a 40-mile (65 km), 8,202-foot (2,500 meter) elevation challenge from Bruck or Heiligenblut. Highlights include Fuschertal valley, cobblestone Edelweißspitze, Hochtor, and views of the Pasterze Glacier and Grossglockner peak. One of the most diverse and demanding high alpine roads, it’s a thrilling, scenic ride for cyclists seeking an unforgettable adventure.

Passo dello Stelvio

The Passo dello Stelivo, or Stelvio Pass, is an iconic, 6,234-foot climb (1,900-meter) from Prad, with 48 hairpins and Ortler views. Glacier air and a winding road create an epic cycling experience. A must-ride for its challenging ascent and stunning alpine scenery, Stelvio’s legendary status makes it a bucket-list pass for cyclists craving an unforgettable challenge.
