On August 12, 2025, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Tulare County, California, as emergency teams saved 46-year-old Ryan Wardwell from Long Beach, who was trapped behind a waterfall in the Kern River for two days.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) reported that Wardwell was last seen on August 10, 2025, at the top of the “Seven Teacups” waterfalls near the North Fork of the Kern River. He had planned to rappel the waterfalls but did not return to his vehicle that night.

Authorities were contacted after Wardwell did not return at his expected time and initiated an extensive search, deploying aircraft equipped with camera and infrared technology to locate Wardwell. Challenging terrain and a late start delayed the rescue until the following morning.

On August 12, the TCSO Swiftwater-Dive Rescue Team and Search and Rescue teams began their operation. A drone was used to inspect behind a large waterfall, where Wardwell was found alive and responsive. He told deputies he had come off his rappel lines and became trapped behind the waterfall due to the river’s powerful hydraulics.

The California Highway Patrol’s Helicopter H-40 played a critical role in the rescue. A TCSO rescue team member was lowered into the water feature, secured Wardwell, and performed a hoist extraction. Wardwell was airlifted to a nearby landing zone, where medical personnel treated him for minor injuries and dehydration. He was then reunited with his family.

The TCSO Emergency Services Division emphasized the importance of environmental awareness and personal preparedness, especially in white water river activities, reminding the public: “Stay Safe, Stay Smart and Stay Alive.”
