Powell, Wyoming — If you’ve ever dreamed of working in the ski industry, a new program will help you become a seasoned professional.
Last week, Northwest College announced that it will introduce a Ski Area Operations Certificate. Starting in Fall 2025, students will be able to complete the 25-credit program, which will span two semesters. According to the college, this will include “day-to-day operations, risk management, ski patrol, lift operations, snowmaking and grooming, avalanche training, and more.” Those who complete the program will also become certified ski patrollers and be able to achieve a Level 1 certification as a ski or snowboard instructor.
Students will spend a mix of time on campus in Powell and at Antelope Butte. However, it’s not the most convenient drive from Northwest, as it’s approximately 83 miles away.
According to the Powell Tribune, the plan was initially inspired by requests from ski areas, such as Sleeping Giant Ski Area, which asked the college whether any of its students would be interested in joining their ski patrol. The initial plan was to have the program run through Sleeping Giant. However, that ski resort has faced difficulties in recent years, as it hasn’t operated for the past two winters. This latest development ultimately raises the question of what the future holds for Sleeping Giant, which was listed for sale last December.
Ski area management programs remain relatively limited at colleges in the United States. Examples of colleges that offer the program include The University of Maine, Vermont State University, Gogebic Community College, Northern Michigan University, and Colorado Mountain College. However, a variety of colleges offer degrees in recreation management, which bears resemblance to studying ski area management. It’s great to see another join the fray, as it’s a sign that the ski industry continues to grow.
