The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has taken the preventive safety measure of closing a hiking trail the town of Tupper Lake after a young bull moose has been observed there repeatedly over the past few weeks. The closure effects Goodman Mountain trail in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest:

“Wild animals can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous when approached. The closure is a precautionary measure to protect public safety and minimize disturbances to the animal.” -DEC

Signs have been posted at trailheads and access points to alert hikers of the danger and visitors are urged to seek alternative hiking destinations. The trail will remain closed until DEC determines it is safe to reopen.  Forest Rangers will be actively enforcing the closure as DEC Wildlife experts monitor the situation closely.

The following video of the offending moose was taken by a couple hiking down from the summit of Goodman Mountain on June 5th.
