A tourist is facing a $224,000 fine after throwing a large rock off a trail in a popular Spanish national park.
According to the New York Post, the young man threw the rock off the side of a mountain along the Cares Trail in Spain’s Picos de Europa National Park. The act was filmed and shared to social media, showing the rock hurtling through the air before hitting the ground with a loud bang.
Nearly 2 million people visit the Picos de Europa National Park annually with around 300,000 hikers taking the Cares trail. While the men in the video clearly found the falling rock to be quite entertaining, many commenters were quick to point out the potential danger created to people below.
The Spanish Civil Guard announced that they’d be investigating the tourist’s behavior after the video went viral. The young men could face a fine between $5,600 and $224,500 due to their actions.
