A large boulder dislodged and fell on the Icefields Parkway near the Weeping Well Day Use Area in Banff National Park on Tuesday, May 13.

In response to the fallen boulder, park staff warned motorists to be prepared for single-lane alternative traffic until the boulder is safely removed. Parks Canada personnel and flaggers will be on scene until the boulder is removed and two-way traffic is restored.

The Icefields Parkway connects the Community of Lake Louise in Banff National Park with the Town of Jasper in Jasper National Park. It’s easily one of the most scenic highways in the world, and visitors should plan for a full day to travel the route in one direction.

Visitors are reminded that road conditions in the mountains can quickly change, with weather, erosion, and natural events like rockfalls or mudslides potentially damaging the road. Motorists should check provincial road dashboards for real-time updates before heading out, making sure no closures, conditions, or safety alerts will disrupt their travels. Drivers should prepare for delays by bringing extra supplies, food, water, and ensure that they have a full tank of gas or full battery.
