Spring skiing goes hand in hand with pond skimming, an amazing event that involves attempting to ski or snowboard across frigid pools of water for the entertainment of the crowd around. Sometimes these are official events hosted by resorts, sometimes they’re not-so-official events that still go down on a ski slope, and sometimes they’re completely in the backcountry.
The risk of a backcountry pond skim is notable. It’s not necessarily dangerous (depending on the person and location) but it can wind up causing a pretty brutal hike, skin, or ski/ride back to the car. Snowboarder Brian Stenerson, for example, likely had to endure a solid moment of discomfort following this brutal pond skim wipeout.
