Norway — While there hasn’t been skiing since last summer at the Fonna Glacier Ski Resort, there’s still been a lot of news coming out of there.
For months, the future of Fonna has been clouded in uncertainty after it filed for bankruptcy last fall. According to the Norwegian news outlet Hordaland, this was due to diminishing glacial ice and notable financial losses. However, many have stepped up to save the remote ski area, which includes a team up of the Fonna Sport AS, Hordaland Ski Association, along with the Adger & Rogaland Ski Association.
Today, Fonna announced that they’re in talks with the bankrutpcy trustee to begin work on preparing for this upcoming ski season. They’re optimistic of reopening this summer, and are trying to open the slopes in May if conditions permit. Notably, the new management team may eventually move the lift to a location that has a more reliable snowpack.
Located inside of Folgefonna National Park, Fonna is one of the places where you ski in the summer. The glacier is serviced by a 1250 meter (4101 foot) T-Bar lift, with several trails of varying difficulty, along with terrain park features. Cross-country ski trails are also available off the summit. The base area is home to a lodge with a cafe, along with a rental shop building.
