West Ossipee, New Hampshire — The most famous abandoned ski area in New Hampshire still makes its impression to this day. The lift towers and haul rope of Whitter’s gondola remain standing, and crosses the White Mountain Highway. Over at the ski area, lots of buildings remain, but they are slowly rotting away.
In 2023, YouTuber Avery Zucco got to explore the remnants of Mt. Whittier. His footage captured the exterior of the old base lodge, the T-Bar, the gondola lift line, and its top station. It shows how much the trails have grown in since the ski resort’s closure in the 1980s. The main slope hosted an adventure park in the 2000s, but that also closed down.
Back in 2023, the NAI Norwood Group listed the ski area for sale. That listing is no longer active, meaning that it either was sold or taken off the market.
If you love Mt. Whittier history, I’d suggest checking out Former Skiers of the old Mt. Whittier in Ossipee, NH Unite! group on Facebook. The group features lots of great vintage photos of what once was New Hampshire’s steepest ski areas.
