Spring avalanche in Japan.
Spring avalanche in Japan.

As average ambient temperatures rise during the spring months, new types of avalanche problems can develop in snowy areas. New snow avalanches, deep wet slab avalanches, wet loose snow avalanches, and icefalls tend to be the most common types of slides in warmer months.

It’s not exactly clear what caused this spring avalanche filmed at Mt. Naeba in Japan, caught on camera near the summit of the resort around 11:37am on March 27. The slide appears to have occurred near the Takenokodaira Pair Lift J.

Naeba Ski Resort is connected to Kagura Ski Resort with Japan’s longest gondola, the Dragondola. Together they combine to create Mt. Naeba. The resort is located just 2 and a half hours from Tokyo by train or car, making it a popular destination. Their season this year will last until April 6, 2025.
