The mountains of Colorado are currently seeing some serious snowfall to kick off the month of April, with some areas expected to see up to or over a foot of snow before 6am on Wednesday.

According to a Winter Weather Alert from the National Weather Service, Rabbit Ears Pass, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Medicine Bow Range, the Mountains of Summit County, the Mosquito Range, and the Indian Peaks are all expected to see between 6 and 14 inches of new snow between this morning and tomorrow.

The National Weather Service expected snowfall forecast for Tuesday, April 1, through Friday, April 4, has the area around Eisenhower Tunnel along the I-70 corridor receiving 12-19 inches of new snowfall. Through the same period, Vail and Aspen are both expected to see between 7-10 inches and Rabbit Ears Pass is expected to see 10-15 inches.

The National Weather Service high end amount forecast, or the 1 in 10 chance of higher snowfall, has Aspen receiving 11 inches between today and Friday. Vail could see up to 16 inches, while the forecast puts a high end amount of 18 inches at Rabbit Ears Pass. The biggest winner would still be the area around Eisenhower Tunnel, where 22 inches of new snow could fall over the next several days.

As always with this heavy winter weather, travel should be done with extreme caution. Roads will be slick and drivers should ensure that their cars are prepared for the conditions. Road closures and conditions can be found at cotrip.org.
