Skier tumbles down Tuckerman Ravine.
Skier tumbles down Tuckerman Ravine.

Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington is a proving ground for New England skiers, serving as one of the biggest spring skiing tradition in the United States. Skiing or snowboarding the ravine requires a several mile hike and steep ascent, but those who make it are rewarded with some of the wildest terrain in the East.

With that difficult terrain comes a serious potential for injury or worse, so hitting the run with caution is necessary. The following video comes from a day when multiple long, uncontrolled falls resulted in injuries in the ravine. The skier below fell nearly 700 feet after losing a ski on chattery snow in the Chute, requiring a response from now rangers and patrollers. Fortunately the skier was able to walk assisted out of the ravin with minor injuries.

According to the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, multiple skiers continued to descend down the Chute despite responders working in the direct runout to assess the individual in the video. Though none of the other skiers hit a responder, they did significantly increase the hazard during the rescue. Always think about those below you before hitting terrain like this.
