Avalanche At Big Sky

Big Sky, Montana – This week, an inbound avalanche at Big Sky Ski Resort in Montana occurred on terrain known as the Bone Crusher area. The avalanche was triggered during control work, and thankfully, no one from the public was involved. Unfortunately, the avalanche did hit the Swift Current 6 Chairlift. Seven resort employees were riding on the chairlift at the time of the slide and required a rope evacuation.

Today, we received footage from inside the lift building, where a Big Sky employee could get footage of the slide. As you can see in the footage above, the avalanche ripped down the face and smashed into the loading area of the chairlift.

Cheers to the Big Sky Ski Patrol, who did a great job mitigating this potentially deadly hazard. Their hard work allows all of us to enjoy some of the best terrain in the country safely. Thank you!
