Uphill skinning at Mount Abrams.
Uphill skinning at Mount Abrams.

Maine’s Mount Abram Ski Area is expanding their uphill access, opening the mountain to skiers and snowboarders who like to go uphill for another day. They’ve also extended uphill evening hours, allowing people to earn their turns until 9pm. With that expansion comes a warning of uphill etiquette and safety. Uphill access is a privilege, not a right, and too many people have been ignoring the area’s uphill policy, so they’ve published a reminder.

Staying away from snowcats, snowmobiles, snowmaking equipment, and other hazards is majorly important for both your safety and the safety of the mountain’s employees. This goes for any resort or ski area that you might be allowed to uphill at.

Additionally, Mount Abram’s reminds users that a day pass, season pass, or uphill pass is required for you to be on the mountain, even if you’re not using the lifts and even if it’s after hours. You need to follow the trail report, too, and stick to the designated uphill paths. If a run is closed during normal hours, it’s closed during the morning and evening too.

Please note that trails are closed as if traveling from the top of the main chairlift. All skiers/riders are responsible for knowing what is open/closed. The most recent Trail Report will tell you of recent trail conditions and closures during non-operating hours.

It’s incredibly cool that Mount Abrams lets dogs on the mountain with uphill skiers, but that also comes with restrictions. They area only allowed on the mountain OUTSIDE of operational hours, and must be leashed at all times unless they have a strong recall. No matter what their recall is, dogs must be leashed at the base area and in the parking lot. Also, clean up after your dog. Don’t be the person leaving your dog’s poop on the mountain.

Mount Abram’s full uphill policy is available here. Don’t ruin it for everyone else.
