A collective of 4 artists are behind what has been declared the world’s smallest ski resort. Opened over the weekend in St. Gallen, in northeastern Switzerland, the art project is an homage to the early days of T-bar lift service in the area and a subtle commentary on the ill effects of climate change.
The “resort” features a residential home that was transformed into a mountain lodge, housing an Airbnb rental and a souvenir shop, and a 20 meter black diamond slope serviced by a t-bar surface lift.
The project cost around $200,000 in total, of which the cantonal government provided around $50,000 through a lottery fund. Artist Roman Signer celebrated the opening of the ski lift with a performance but unfortunately there was no natural snow so the first tracks down the world’s smallest ski resort were of a ceremonial nature. The après-ski bar however was open and did swift business.
