Font-Romeu in the the Pyrénées Catalanes natural park in France is a winter sports hotspot, providing visitors with access to sled dogs, snowmobiles, snowshoes, and, of course, skiing and snowboarding. Like any ski area, Font-Romeu has skiers and snowboarders who follow the skier responsibility code and some who don’t.
In this case, an apparent beginner skier fails to slow down as they pass through a clearly marked gateway/slow section. As they get close to the choke point, the skier slams into another, very visible and totally predictable skier on the mountain. Though the uphill skier is always responsible, this is one of those cases where the uphill skier seems to be 100% at fault.
On any ski resort, you as a snowboarder or skier are responsible for remaining in control and moving at a safe speed, ensuring you can stop when it becomes necessary. Skiing too fast or out of control can lead to serious injury or worse for both you and others. Make sure you stick to the skier’s responsibility code when out on the mountain.
Your Responsibility Code:
- Always stay in control. You must be able to stop or avoid people or objects.
- People ahead or downhill of you have the right-of-way. You must avoid them.
- Stop only where you are visible from above and do not restrict traffic.
- Look uphill and avoid others before starting downhill or entering a trail.
- You must prevent runaway equipment.
- Read and obey all signs, warnings, and hazard markings.
- Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
- You must know how and be able to load, ride and unload lifts safely. If you need assistance, ask the lift attendant.
- Do not use lifts or terrain when impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- If you are involved in a collision or incident, share your contact information with each other and a ski area employee.
