Weeks where the National Park Service‘s social media team doesn’t share an iconic post seem to be pretty rare. This time the team is back with a Homer Simpson reference, shouting out one of the greatest episodes of the iconic TV show, Mr. Plow (Season 4, Episode 9), to remind guests that even when there’s snow on the ground, bison need to be given plenty of space.
Bison are still active in the winter, moving to lower elevations as the snowpack increases, but often remaining quite visible to those visiting during the colder months. As a reminder, Yellowstone National Park requires that visitors give bison plenty of space, at least 25 yards (75 feet), at all times. The video below shows just a bit of what can happen when you fail to follow those rules.

“Call Mr. Plow, That’s my name, That name again Is Mr. Plow.” – Homer Simpson

With their large heads and massive neck and shoulder muscles, they can clear a path and forage through deep snow. Remember: When encountering a snowplow or a bison, always “give it room” by staying a safe distance behind it.
