The world’s winning most alpine ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin shared a recovery update following an emergency surgery that took place last Thursday. The surgery was to wash out a cavity filled with old hematoma that wasn’t properly draining, working to wash it out and close it with sutures.

Had a little unexpected surgery on Thursday evening after feeling a bit under the weather. Turns out I had a little cavity deeper than the wound tract that was filled with old hematoma and wasn’t properly draining with wound vac or normal packing…so we went in to wash it out and close it with sutures and a little JP drain to keep the drainage flowing.” – Mikaela Shiffrin

Shiffrin suffered a puncture wound in a crash at the Killington World Cup several weeks ago. The tip of her ski pole was the suspected culprit for what stabbed her. The accident and her injury have lead to her missing several races in this Alpine World Cup season.

Hopefully the injury heals quickly and we see Shiffrin back on her skis fairly soon. Until then we wish her the best recovery possible.
