Rockaway Township, New Jersey — A wildfire is burning near what was once a vibrant ski area.
On Thursday night, a fire started in Rockaway Township. This wildfire is located near the Craigmeur Ski Area, which closed in 1997 and is now part of the Craigmeur Recreation Complex. The wildfire has resulted in 202 acres burning. Eight homes were evacuated due to the fire, but they were allowed to return on Saturday.
Over the past few days, various fire departments have responded to the call, which has resulted in “substantial progress” in containing the fire. As of Sunday evening, the wildfire is 85% contained, but an extensive rainstorm will be needed to stop the smoke. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but New Jersey has been going through a very dry stretch over the past few months.
The Craigmeur Ski Area in Newfoundland, New Jersey, was one of the most historic ski areas in the state. Operating from 1937 to 1997, the ski area is now a part of a public park. This upside-down ski hill featured beginner and intermediate runs, as it was advertised as a family-friendly mountain.
In 2022, YouTuber Avery Zucco explored the ski area, which you can check out below. Click here to see more of Avery Zucco’s explorations of lost ski areas across the Northeast.
