Snowmaking at Sunday River.
Snowmaking at Sunday River.

Sunday River has been on a major snowmaking push since weather dropped over the weekend, with the snow guns running hard for the past three days. While it was incredibly exciting to see, it’s been near impossible to ignore the warmer weather clearly incoming towards the Maine ski resort. Today’s mountain report from the ski area officially conceded defeat to the warm weather, stating that snow making would be put temporarily on pause.

While Mother Nature gave us ideal conditions overnight, we’re expecting temperatures to climb above freezing later today, which will pause snowmaking operations temporarily. The forecast shows another window of opportunity approaching this weekend. Our teams are ready to fire up the system the moment temperatures allow, continuing our march toward opening day.” – Sunday River

Snowmaking has been strong around the mountain, with over 200 snow guns working hard along Jordan and Locke peaks. Specifically, Upper Punch and T2 saw some major production with substantial depth built.

Sadly the Weather Channel is forecasting some remarkably warm weather for the mountain over the next several days, potentially creeping into the mid-70s on October 31. This weekend could present some colder weather viable for snowmaking, but that’s yet to be seen, and next week shows another few days of warmer weather.

Sunday River does not yet have a set opening day and the warm weather will likely do some damage to the built up snow already on the mountain, but an opening day will be coming in the near future. Last year, Sunday River opened on November 14.

Stay tuned to our social channels and website for updates on opening day announcements. We’re as excited as you are to kick off another epic season here in Maine’s Western Mountains.” – Sunday River
