Congratulations to 34-year-old Italian ski racer Federica Brignone who became the oldest woman to win an Alpine skiing World Cup race this morning after taking home the top spot at the season opener in overtaking first-run leader Mikaela Shiffrin in the season opener Saturday in Sölden, Austria.
Shortly before the first runs, reigning World Cup overall champion Lara Gut-Behrami withdrew from the event because she wasn’t feeling 100% while recovering from the flu and a recent knee injury and didn’t want to risk injuring herself. Her absence left the door wide open for the rest of the field.
Mikaela Shiffrin was looking good after her fist run which put her in the lead but then had an underwhelming second run which placed her 27th out of 28 racers. She finished 5th overall. Mikaela’s potential 98th World Cup victory will have to wait for the next event on November 17th in Levi, Finland, where she will compete in slalom where she is ultra dominant.
Brignone won her first World Cup in Sölden 9 years ago and has 28 World Cup wins under her belt. Congratulations Federica!
