Val Thorens in France.
Val Thorens in France.

There are well over 350 ski resorts in France. Some are bigger, some are smaller, some are more luxurious, and some are more bare-boned. Picking a location and planning a trip can be difficult when there are that many options, so Top Snow Travel‘s half-French/half-Australian founder Gilles Riou ranked his top seven resorts in the European country. To do so, Riou considered the villages, the lodging, the family friendliness, the size of the ski areas, the snow quality, alternative activities offered around the resort, and much more. Mostly though, Riou kept a focus aimed towards luxury.

Riou’s entire list is as follows:

7. Chamonix
6. Val Thorens
5. Arc 1950
4. Avoriaz 1800
3. Courchevel
2. Méribel
1. Val d’Isère
