Despite appearing incredibly accessible, Mount Washington regularly sees some of the worst weather on Earth. The lowest wind chills ever recorded on the mountain have reached a brutal -109°F and the fastest wind speeds have reached up to 231mph. And yet people are still deceived, with dangerous and risky rescues occurring fairly frequently.
In 1982, one Mount Washington rescue led to the death of a volunteer and changed the lives of two climbers. It also managed to have a massive impact the future of prosthetics. 109° Below tells that story.
“A tale of resilience, grit, and elite rescue volunteers going out of their way to save the lives of strangers, 109° BELOW traces how an attempted rescue on Mount Washington in 1982 changed not only the course of two climbers’ lives – but also the lives of the rescuers who tried to save them, and the future of prosthetics, forever.“
