The Winter Park Express.
The Winter Park Express.

Driving I-70 to the ski resorts in Colorado can be a nightmare. Either you wake up early enough to beat the traffic, or you spend several hours waiting to get to your go-to ski resort. So Amtrak offers a different form of transportation to the mountains: the Winter Park Express. Those hoping to make their way from the city to Winter Park Resort can hop on a train at Union Station, enjoying a traffic-free ride to the mountains. Rocky Mountain PBS took a look at the train and it’s history ahead of the 2024/25 ski season.

The Amtrak Winter Park Express runs between January and March, with fares costing as low as $29. In the past the train has run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until the end of March. It departs from Denver’s Union Station at 7:00am, arriving at the resort by 9:00am. In the evening the train departs from Winter Park at 4:30pm and returns to the city by 6:40pm.

Large windows and wide recliner seats provide beautiful sights and comfortable rides, while the Sightseer Lounge offers panoramic views of the mountains as visitors ride through. Tickets for the Winter Park Express are not yet on sale, though they’ll be available here when they are. Winter Park is set to open as soon as possible, with no official date set in stone.
