A fire at Big Cypress National Preserve destroyed a portion of the Kirby Storter Boardwalk at mile marker 62 along the Tamiami Trail. Greater Naples Fire Department responded, using chainsaws and hand tools to create a firebreak in the boardwalk.

Though the Fire Department’s work was able to hold the fire from growing on the western advancement, flames consumed and destroyed much of the boardwalks eastern portion.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and the entire boardwalk and adjacent parking area is closed to the public at this time. At the conclusion of the investigation, National Park Service personnel will assess the damage and begin the arduous process of environmental cleanup and reconstruction of the boardwalk.

The Kirby Storter boardwalk is a major attractor for visitors to Big Cypress National Preserve, taking visitors through the grassland and leading into a cypress dome. The trail ends at a pond known to contain egrets, herons, and nesting alligators.

Any suspicious behavior seen by guests inside Big Cypress should be reported to the park’s 24-hour dispatch at 305-242-7740.
