JASPER NATIONAL PARK, Canada – It was a devastating summer for Jasper National Park and surrounding area, as a massive wildfire complex burned through the park and neighboring towns. Hikers, tourists, and residents were all forced to evacuate as the fires left a trail of devastation. By July 26, the fire complex had reached 89,000 acres.

As a result of the fire, huge portions of the park were closed through the remained of the summer, including several trails, campsites, and backcountry camping as a whole. Some areas have been able to reopen throughout the late summer and fall, but backcountry camping has stays off-limits. Today, October 11, many of those backcountry trails and sites have officially reopened.

For many people, backcountry camping is a way to connect with nature and appreciate the awe-inspiring landscapes of Jasper National Park. Backcountry camping in Jasper National Park re-opens on Friday, October 11, 2024!” – Jasper National Park

Backcountry trails and areas that reopen today include Athabasca Island, Brazeau Trail, Chaba Trail, Fiddle River Trail, Jacques Lake Trail, Maligne Lake, Maligne Pass, North Boundary Trail, Saturday Night Lake Trail, and the South Boundary Trail. Several day trails, including Airfield, Overlander, Maligne Lookout, Fifth and Sixth Bridge Loop, Moose Lake Loop, Opal Hills Loop, Bald Hills, and the Mary Schäffer Loop have reopened as well.

Both the Maligne Road and the Celestine Road opened at 8am local time this morning, though Maligne Canyon is still closed and high-clearance vehicles are recommended for Celestine (no trailers or RVs).

Backcountry users should be prepared for downed trees on trails and possible trail washouts. During the summer, many of Jasper National Park’s resources were reassigned to wildfire response and recovery and backcountry trails have received less maintenance than usual. Check the trail conditions report before you go and submit your own report after your trip.” – Jasper National Park

Many trails and area within the park are still closed. Make sure to plan ahead and check parks status before heading in. A full map of what’s open and closed inside Jasper National Park is available here.
