Altenmarkt, Austria — Like most companies, Atomic Skiing faces the reality that the climate is changing, and not in the minimal way that snarky commenters on Facebook claim it is. This is an especially urgent situation for Atomic, as a warmer planet will mean less snow and, thus, fewer opportunities to ski. In response, Atomic Skiing is stepping up to protect the future of snow.
Back in June, Atomic released its 2024 Impact Statement, which they shared via social media on September 27th. This is Atomic’s second annual impact statement, with its first one being released last year. Atomic’s move was to show the public its commitment to reducing its emissions. Their climate actions are based on six principles: urgency and importance, science-based, business intrinsic, humble and transparent, creating space, and performance innovation.
To lower its climate impact, Atomic set nine goals: conduct a greenhouse gas inventory, set a science-based target to reduce emissions, cut emissions from business-related travel, increase reliance on renewable energy, incorporate sustainability into Atomic’s design thinking, extend product lifespans through repairs, use more recycled content, host a climate summit, and engage/educate Atomic’s athlete network.
So far, they’ve accomplished two of these: conducting a greenhouse gas inventory and hosting a climate summit. Atomic plans to host another climate summit this year. The other goals are currently in progress.
Some of Atomic’s environmental accomplishments in 2023 include starting a trial boot take-back program with 61 retailers in Austria, continuing its work to certify its Environmental Management System at its HQ in Altenmarket, and creating a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process for their products.
Atomic aims to reduce its climate impact over the next couple of decades. By 2030, Atomic aspires to reduce its COâ‚‚ emissions by 50% and become a net zero company (adding no new carbon emissions into the atmosphere) by 2050.
Atomic is apart of Amer Sports, which also owns Arc’teryx, Armada, and Salomon, among other brands.
